DONOR STORY: “ALL MY FEARS DIDN’T COME TRUE”
To be honest, I had a lot that held me back from donating at first. I was opposed to donate for profit before I found you could donate through the NHS. I was afraid of the impact it would have on my future family and about my privacy. All the fears I had did not come true.
The staff at the NUH lab was always kind and ready to answer all my questions. They are very discrete, and even offer free consultations for you (and your partner if you have one) regarding the donation process. You are given a lot of freedom, and can always go back on your choices and consult with one of their specialists with any doubts.
A SURPRISING SHORTAGE
I was really surprised the UK has actually a shortage of donors – a lot of the sperm has to be imported from other countries, which is costly for the NHS. The thought that I could help someone create a family as well as save the NHS some money motivated me to go on with my commitment.
Furthermore, after speaking to the specialists I understood all the implications of my choice and what the donor children usually look for in a donor when contacting them, which took away my fear of the implications this would have on my family. I would really encourage you to give it a try.
